An out-of-town trip. A recently discovered hole-in-the-wall. A would-be pastime. A short silly talk. An interesting brew.

Another weekend habit.

Most Sunday or Saturday evenings, right after attending mass at Pius, we would take a gradual walk along UN Avenue, passing the Sikh Temple and Unilever then crossing the Pres. Quirino Extension near Robinson’s Otis. Right there at the crossroads, we would make a short stop in a small “booth” owned by Manang who sells balut, softdrinks, biscuits, candies and yosi, and calls each of her customers “Anak”. She would give us two balut eggs, then remind us of the available “maanghang na sawsawan”: 1 for mild, 2 for strong, and 3 for very strong. [Of course, I would rather choose salt.] She would generously offer a roll of tissue (unlike many fast food chains that limit a piece of super lightweight tissue to one person regardless of the order size) and monobloc stools. Sometimes, a tricycle driver would give us his chair (there is a tricycle “terminal” nearby).

My first browse for the day (after one cancelled meeting and another missed meeting due to a dial mix-up) swayed me to check out this particular MSN front page article that includes the following statement:

Our typical Sunday morning starts with buying hot pandesal and a newspaper, and preparing our cup of coffee. Then, we spend an hour or two reading the paper, exchanging sections– the front page first for me and the Sports section first for him. The coffee serves as a filler as we browse from one page to the next, giving our unsolicited personal commentaries from time to time [although he prefers reading in silence and I prefer sharing any interesting info with him as soon as I finish reading that particular topic]. Looking out for Gabi as she messes around serves as interlude.

We seated at the third row seats of an FX on our way back home from malling, after attending an anticipated mass last Saturday. He blurted out, smiling: “Mamalengke tayo bukas? Gusto mo ba yung plan ko na yon? Ha, kulit?” He sounded playful. The two ladies infront of us tried to control their grin. But I thought it was cute– the way he said it. Another Sunday morning to look forward to.

Just The Thing

It would’ve started “Once a upon a time” and ended “A sad story, don’t you think?”

It’s the line from one of the short stories in Haruki Murakami‘s The Elephant Vanishes. I bought it from National Bookstore in Eastwood as my incentive to myself for another month (another payday). In short, wala lang talaga– trip trip lang. I was just lured by “An elephant vanishes; hunger drives a couple to rob McDonalds; an insomniac wife wakes in a different world,” printed at the back cover. I didn’t realize at first that the book is a series of short stories (until I got a bit confused of the transitions and Raymond informed me that the book is indeed all shorts.)

Things have been a little crazy lately. Crazy in an amusing way, I suppose.grace‘s vocabulary :P ). But absolutely, no regrets. And our playful little guy has been giving us relief since day one.
