An out-of-town trip. A recently discovered hole-in-the-wall. A would-be pastime. A short silly talk. An interesting brew.

Equus Manila

My buddy and I had the chance to watch Peter Shaffer’s controversial and award-winning play Equus at Onstage in Greenbelt 1 on its 2nd to the last playdates last Saturday night, directed by Audie Gemora and topbilled by Red Concepcion as Alan Strang. [I heard great comments on Concepcion's alternate Marco Mañalac]. The very same play became more recognized when Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe made his US theatrical debut playing Strang in 2007. This strictly for adults only dramatic piece revolves around a child psychiatrist’s attempt to examine and treat a 17-year old boy (Strang) who has a very strange obsession with horses. Coming to grips with his self-worth and personal goal, the boy deems horses (a horse named Nugget in particular) as gods and, eventually, fails to differentiate his thing for them with carnal desires. [Some terms were deliberately altered and toned down to suit readers of all ages.]

Take Home

A backlog post.  Anyway, after taking his certification (which is swell by the way) at Antel 2000, my buddy and I settled on dining in at Amber‘s in Brgy. Palanan, Makati.  Our verdict? Hmmm, OK, we’ll be very blunt. Dropping by the place deliberately at a very humid lunch time only to eat— well— lunch, isn’t worth it. Don’t get us wrong, their pichi-pichi and pancit (which my boss bought for us last month) are really good. Perhaps, some of their menu items taste good as well. But the whole dining experience would be much better if you just take home your order.

Recess at Sickbay

We had an unusual date last night. There was no definite plan aside from dropping by the Greenbelt chapel. After staggering along Dela Rosa St. and a few side streets for more than half an hour, both of us undecided trying to find a quiet spot where we could have our dinner, we ended up at the second floor of the Makati Medical Center. Then it was final— dinner to be served at the Floating Island Restaurant.

Yesterday was a free weekday for the two of us. Petiks. In the afternoon, we roamed around Gilmore and some subdued street in Cubao scouting for the set of hardware for the PC that he’s going to build one of these days. After our successful task for the day, we headed to Som’s Noodle House along Algier St. (is it Algier or Alger?) near Rockwell Powerplant Mall for an authentic Thai cuisine.

I’ve had a bunch of pending movie and book reviews in our cupboards. And they would probably stay there until December. Anyway, I’d start with the most recent weekender picture that we had last week at Greenbelt 3 Cinema 2 (which audio system we promote ). But before I begin, I’d like to warn you that this entry contains SPOILERS.

Persia

Woohoo! My four-day mega fast was over. I literally got weak in the knees. I woke up early and slept earlier than my usual nighttime for four days to manage some energy. By a quirk of fate, my buddy has been on the 6AM-2PM shift. Anyway, right after my whole cleansing drama and my first real meal, which was a tiny bowl of Payless Instant Mami Chicken Noodles, he fetched me after work and swayed me to try the Persia Grill branch along Valero Street, two corners away from Citibank Tower.

Thursday last week, we took a short afternoon stroll along H.V. dela Costa trying to locate this authentic Italian restaurant, which I had discovered on the net. My buddy thought that we were on the wrong track since we had almost reached the end of the curve without any sign of the resto. I had become a little skeptical knowing my stupefying sense of direction, which almost pushed me to buy his quick assessment. But I still insisted on walking further because I knew I had done my research well. I was confident that we were almost there.

My buddy and I have recently savored the Korean invasion. And we both got a kick out of our first try. Thanks to my guy stylist Tei and my buddy’s girl stylist, who pretty much look like the heroine in My Sassy Girl. Read the rest of this entry »
